Happiness is not one-size-fits-all. You can’t determine what “happiness” means or looks like for each individual person, because we all have our likes, dislikes, and needs. Maybe your life looks perfect from the outside, but inside, you are stressed and up to your ears in work. Or, maybe you feel perfectly calm, but on the outside, it looks totally different. While you cannot control everything that happens in your life, and you know that life will not always be an easy, flat road, you can control one thing: how you react to situations. How you choose to see it. For example, you could have a hard day and wallow around in it, or you could have a hard day and then decide, “yeah, this day sucked, BUT tomorrow is a new day and I’m going to turn it around.” You get what I’m putting down? Life is hard, BUT we get to choose how we feel every single day…and hopefully, you choose to see the good. If you struggle with it, here are 4 wise tips for living where you are in life:
Don’t compare yourself to anyone else
There is one thing that you are better at than everyone else. Do you want to know what it is? Okay, okay, I’ll tell you. You are better at being YOU than anyone else. This is the only game that you can win when it comes to comparison. Comparing ourselves to others is truly like the saying - it’s a thief of joy. It allows others to drive our behavior, and typically, when we compare, it’s about things that you can’t exactly control (like genetics such as height, weight, or athletic ability). Here’s the scoop: you can be anything that you want to be, but you cannot be everything. Comparisons between people are a recipe for unhappiness, and typically, it promotes self-destructive behaviors. The only time it doesn’t create this recipe of unhappiness? When you are the best at everything…and nobody is the best at every single little thing.
Don’t worry, there is good news. You have so many talents and strengths just by being you. Focus on what you are great at, work to improve when it comes to the things you love, and keep reaching for the stars. You are great, just the way you are! Please always remember that.
Do what you love
Do you know how much time we spend on things that really don’t serve us well? I mean, work alone takes up most of our time during the week, so if you do not actually like what you are doing, it can be miserable, which can affect your overall mental and physical health. In addition to work, we spend time doing other things such as going to events and parties that we truly do not want to go to, we meet up with “friends” who bring us down (more on this in a bit), and we probably spend more time in front of the TV, or computer, instead of outside, in nature. Now, maybe you love the TV, but if you love nature, why not focus more on that instead? If there is a job possibility somewhere else that could bring you more happiness, why stay at your current job just because it is comfortable? The same goes for where you live. If you could move and be happier, why stay? Is it because you are comfortable and do not know that there are other options? If so, find someone reputable that can help walk you through the options and possibilities. Hire a great real estate team, a professional realtor, and the most important part? Don’t take yourself too seriously
There might or might not be studies behind this, but I believe that if you take life (and yourself) too seriously, it can potentially cause a lot of stress and dissatisfaction. On the other hand, if you are more lighthearted and kind, it probably makes you feel happier, more satisfied, and healthier, too. If we are easier on ourselves and if we focus more on reducing stress and having fun, we will be in a better position to actually love our lives.
Have friends that build you up
We all have that one friend who brings the negativity into conversations a little too much. Maybe they are focused more on the “what ifs,” or the bad in a situation than the good, or maybe they just struggle to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Who knows! Either way, experts suggest that surrounding yourself with good and positive people, who focus on the glass half full, can better our health and love of life. I mean, it’s simple: avoiding toxic relationships helps keep us healthier - especially when it comes to mental health. If you want to truly love where you are in life, find a group of friends that help you see the good in any situation. Eliminate toxic relationships and focus on those friends who encourage and uplift you. It’s truly a gift when you find those people…when you do find them, hold on tight!
